Broken Compass By Ervin Munir | Review

Ervin Munir has recently got my attention with his latest release, ‘Broken Compass.’ This album defies easy categorization, and it leans more towards folk and folk-rock than traditional pop. However, it weaves in elements of pop structures and undertones from various genres, making it a captivating and multi-faceted musical experience that influenced me to delve into it.

Comprising 10 tracks, all new to my ears, the album kicks off with ‘Fall from Grace,’ setting the stage for a narrative-rich trip. Ervin explores complex aspects of life, including love and loss, with a storytelling quality that doesn’t disappoint. While the acoustic guitar remains a central element in Ervin’s music, he introduces various other sounds that enhance the overall sound. The ballad-like texture of the first track smoothly transitions into ‘Fall Apart,’ featuring an American-esque twang.

A standout track on the album is ‘Pick up the Phone,’ where Tina Blaber collaborates with Ervin on vocal duties. The track boasts an infectious rhythm, and its melody engraves itself into my mind. The title track, ‘Broken Compass,’ is another noteworthy delivery, reflecting Ervin’s versatility. As the album concludes with ‘Oh Why,’ built on a piano arrangement, Ervin’s heartfelt vocals envelop me like a warm blanket on a cold day, providing a poignant ending to the experience.
